The Fed Stays on Hold, Powell Defends the Institution's Independence
Jerome Powell's press conference did not deliver any major change to the policy trajectory, but it did confirm the statement's more cautious message released earlier. The Fed kept rates in a 3.50% to 3.75% range and toughened its description of inflation, now deemed "elevated" in part because of the recent rise in global energy prices. Powell also warned that in the near term, this shock would push headline inflation higher, while acknowledging that the size and duration of its effects remain uncertain.
