BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) - The European Commission has appointed its first-ever Special Envoy for Artificial Intelligence. Danish executive Jim Hagemann Snabe will advise European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Vice-President Henna Virkkunen in this newly created role. The objective is to maximize the transformative potential of AI across the European Union, according to a statement by Virkkunen.

Hagemann Snabe is expected to hold the position until the end of March next year and will serve in an unpaid capacity.

The appointment comes at a critical juncture for the Commission's AI policy, the executive body stated. The primary rationale behind the post is to integrate expertise from outside the Commission. Furthermore, he is tasked with drafting a report on industrial AI.

Decades of Experience in the IT Sector

Hagemann Snabe has held positions at renowned technology companies and has been a member of various international and financial institutions. He brings 25 years of experience from the IT and AI sectors. According to Siemens, Hagemann Snabe is a member of the technology group's supervisory board.

In accordance with regulations for special advisers, the Commission conducted a thorough vetting process prior to Hagemann Snabe's appointment to ensure no conflict of interest exists between his duties as Special Envoy and his professional activities outside the Commission. For the duration of his mandate, he will suspend his membership on the Google Cloud Advisory Board, among other roles.

Status as Pro Bono Special Adviser

He will advise the European Commission across the entire spectrum of industrial AI, the authority announced. According to the Commission, particular focus will be placed on AI infrastructure, including data centers, High Performance Computing (HPC), and the semiconductor supply chains critical for AI deployment./laf/DP/jha
