::Hamas says the killing of a senior commander by Israel threatens the Gaza ceasefire

::Gaza City, Gaza / December 14, 2025

The mourners chanted "Martyrs are dear to God" and carried the bodies in coffins draped in green Hamas flags, in one of the group's biggest displays of its presence since a U.S.-backed ceasefire deal came into effect in Gaza in October.

Hamas' Gaza chief Khalil Al-Hayya confirmed on Sunday the killing of Saed in an Israeli strike a day earlier. It was the highest-profile assassination of a senior Hamas figure since a Gaza ceasefire deal came into effect in October.

In a joint statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Saturday (December 13), Saed was targeted in response to an attack by Hamas in which an explosive device injured two soldiers earlier on Saturday.

The attack on the car in Gaza City killed five people and wounded at least 25 others, according to Gaza health authorities.
