MUNICH (dpa-AFX) - The second day of the Lufthansa pilot strike began quietly at Munich Airport's Terminal 2. "There is nothing going on," a spokesperson for the airport said upon inquiry. Affected passengers had been informed and did not travel to the airport. Terminal 2 in Munich is used by Lufthansa and its partner airlines.
At Germany's second-largest airport, 898 take-offs and landings were scheduled for Tuesday - 347 of which had been cancelled by the morning, according to the airport. However, this figure applies to all airlines; the airport did not provide specific data for flights affected by the strike at the core Lufthansa brand, Lufthansa Cargo, and Cityline. Some Lufthansa flights were still listed as scheduled on the departure boards.
The pilot strike began at 12:01 a.m. on Monday and is set to last 48 hours. At the leisure carrier Eurowings, all departures from German airports were affected on Monday only.
This marks the fourth wave of strikes at Lufthansa. Further industrial action is already looming for Wednesday and Thursday. The cabin crew union Ufo has called on flight attendants at Lufthansa and Cityline to stage a two-day walkout.
This fifth wave of strikes by flight personnel will overshadow the ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the original Lufthansa this Wednesday. The unions are planning a rally in front of the corporate headquarters at Frankfurt Airport./sax/DP/zb
