MEXICO CITY--Shareholders of Mexican company Alfa on Monday approved the decision to change the name of the former conglomerate to Sigma Foods.

Alfa, based in Monterrey, Mexico, has focused on its processed foods operations since spinning off its petrochemicals, auto parts and telecommunications units in recent years.

"The legal entity name change is part of the planned corporate alignment efforts following the successful transformation into a pure-play, global branded food business," Alfa said in a release. "The focus at Sigma Foods is to capitalize on the extraordinary potential of the food sector."

Sigma Foods, which has operations in Mexico, Europe, the U.S. and elsewhere in Latin America, will soon adopt a new logo and have a new ticker symbol, the company added. For the third quarter, its first full quarter as a purely branded-food business, Alfa/Sigma reported net profit of $75 million on sales of $2.42 billion.
