FLENSBURG (dpa-AFX) - Pure electric vehicles accounted for a quarter of all new car registrations in Germany in May. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 59,969 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered, representing a 39.3 percent increase compared to the same month last year. Their share of total new registrations (239,448) stood at 25.0 percent.

Hybrid powertrains were found in 95,466 new cars, capturing a 39.9 percent market share and marking a 3.6 percent year-on-year increase. This figure includes 27,921 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Growth in the PHEV segment reached 10.9 percent, with a market share of 11.7 percent.

Significant decline in gasoline-powered registrations

New registrations for gasoline-powered cars fell by 23.7 percent to 51,806 units, bringing their market share down to just over one-fifth (21.6 percent). Diesel registrations totaled 30,547, a 13 percent decline, resulting in a 12.8 percent market share.

Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) remained the strongest segment, accounting for 35.4 percent of new registrations following a 5.3 percent increase. The highest growth rate was recorded in the mini-van segment at 22.1 percent, though it represents only 0.6 percent of the market.
