John Clifton Bogle

John C. Bogle is the founder of The Vanguard Group, one of the most important mutual funds in the world.

Currently he is chairman of the Centre for financial markets’ studies Bogle Vanguard, he is a strong defender of low cost index funds, constantly denouncing the high rates’ investment funds that levy the margin of their customers.

He studied management at Princeton University, where he graduated in 1947. Then he continued his studies at Blair Academy where he received a degree in 1951.

In the same year, John Bogle is recruited by Walter Morgan, founder and President of Wellington Management Company. He climbed step by step the ranks to become in 1967 the president, a position he held until 1996.

In 1974, he founded the Vanguard Group. Having studied during all his life the best way to invest, he develops a first index called the Vanguard 500, which philosophy is to minimize the manager’s costs and to expand his stocks’ portfolio.

Vanguard Group currently manages over 100 mutual funds with $ 950 billion in assets. In 1999, Jack Brennan succeeds to John C. Bogle as president of the group.

In 1999, Fortune magazine ranked him among the four “investment giants” of 20th century. In 2004, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award from Institutional Investor, and the Time ranked him among the 100 most influential people in the world.
