Upcycling Used Paper Cups into Fabric Products as Paper Yarn Fiber "OJO⁺PC"
~From Everyday Waste to New Value:
A New Step Toward Realizing a Resource-Circulating Society~
Oji Holdings Corporation (Representative Director and President: Hiroyuki Isono, Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo), together with Oji F-Tex Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Hirokazu Yasui, Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) and Oji Fiber Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Masakazu Hirai, Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo), a joint venture with the KPP Group, is pleased to announce the development of a new paper yarn material "OJO⁺PC" made from recycled used paper cups, and the launch of an initiative to upcycle it into fabric products.
Paper cups are generally plastic-laminated to provide water resistance, and as prohibited items that cannot be placed in the current used paper collection, the majority are disposed of by incineration. However, in recent years, the importance of sustainable material recycling - reusing used products as raw materials again - has been increasing toward the realization of a circular economy, and the development of recycling technologies for paper cups has also been exptected. In this initiative, by utilizing the Oji Group's recycling technology, we produce paper yarn "OJO⁺PC" using the fiber content (pulp) of paper cups as raw material, transforming them into fabric products.
Since 2022, we have been promoting paper cup recycling in collaboration with a wide range of industries, including food service, hospitality, construction, and distribution. In September 2025, we launched the new brand "Renewa"* to accelerate our efforts. In this initiative, Oji F-Tex Co., Ltd. recycles used paper cups into OJO⁺ base paper for paper yarn, and Oji Fiber Co., Ltd. twists it into paper yarn "OJO⁺PC". Furthermore, by upcycling into fabric products using paper yarn "OJO⁺PC", we add higher value and contribute to expanding paper cup recycling and realizing a resource-circulating society.
The Oji Group will continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through the circular use of resources and the development of environmentally friendly materials and products.
*About Renewa
"Renewa" is a new corporate collaboration-based recycling system that makes materials that were previously difficult to recycle renewable. Aiming for a future where the circle of resource recycling expands, we continue to challenge the recycling of more waste through technology development and partnerships. For details on the initiative, please visit the dedicated website.
